Climate protection in IDAR-Oberstein
What is the climate and how is it changing?
Climate is the average state of the atmosphere at a location or in a specific area over a longer period of time. The World Meteorological Organization recommends a period of at least 30 years. If this long-term condition changes significantly, this is referred to as climate change.
Aim of climate protection
The aim of climate protection is to reduce man-made emissions of climate-damaging gases, known as greenhouse gases. Particular attention is paid to avoiding CO2 emissions.
CO2 gas is mainly released through the combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as petrol and diesel, which predominantly power our cars, or fuels such as heating oil and natural gas produce more CO2 emissions when burned than the combustion of renewable energies to generate electricity from solar radiation, wind power and biomass. The same applies to electricity from the public grid. In 2016, 38.9% of electricity from the power socket was still generated from the combustion of hard coal and lignite and 12.9% from the reaction of nuclear power.
