In an emergency, every minute counts. This makes it all the more important for emergency responders to have quick access to vital health and contact information. This is exactly where the SOS emergency can comes in: The city of Idar-Oberstein is currently distributing 2,000 of them to home care services and residents, with the aim of raising awareness of a simple yet effective precautionary measure.
The SOS emergency can is a small plastic container in which you can store the most important information for a medical emergency. This includes, for example, details about medications, pre-existing conditions, and allergies, as well as important contact information. The can is kept in the refrigerator door. A sign on the front door and on the refrigerator informs emergency responders that an emergency kit is available and where to find it. The concept is intentionally simple: even if a person is unable to provide information themselves in an emergency, important details are quickly accessible.
“The SOS emergency can, is a good example of how greater safety in everyday life doesn’t have to be complicated,” explains Mayor Frank Frühauf. “A small can allows important information to be compiled and made quickly accessible in an emergency. That’s why we want to help raise awareness of this helpful service in Idar-Oberstein.”
The city administration distributes the emergency cans through various channels; among other things, home care services receive them to pass on to their clients. Residents can also pick up an SOS emergency can free of charge directly at the city administration’s citizen services office. In addition, the cans are distributed through counseling centers and medical facilities to reach, in particular, older adults, people with health conditions, or those in need of assistance.
This initiative is made possible by a generous donation from the Bittmann Foundation, based in Meisenheim. The nonprofit organization has provided a total of 30,000 SOS emergency kits for the districts of Bad Kreuznach and Birkenfeld, as well as the municipality of Lauterecken-Wolfstein.
