As the second event in the city’s theater program, the Neues Globe Theater will present the play “Draußen vor der Tür” on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at the Messe Idar-Oberstein. Wolfgang Borchert’s only play is a poetic outcry against silence, against turning a blind eye, and against repression.
A man returns from the war—and can no longer find a place in life. Beckmann is 25, scarred in body and soul, and finds himself facing closed doors: the society he served, and a future that no longer wants him. In a dreamlike journey, Beckmann encounters not only people but also mythical figures: Death, the Elbe River, God—and the Other, a mirror image of himself.
Amid the stark seriousness and grotesque escalation, surprising, almost absurdly comical moments arise time and again, moments that both disrupt and intensify the action. Live music provides a commentary on the action, drives it forward, and opens up additional layers.
Wolfgang Borchert wrote the play in 1947; it was seen as a cry from a previously silent young generation and is now considered the most important antiwar drama in German theater. He did not live to see the first stage production of his play. The day before the premiere, he died in Basel after a serious illness—at the age of only 26. Today, the play feels alarmingly relevant; the Neues Globe Theater brings it to the stage with clarity, intensity, and a joy for the craft—creating a moving evening that shocks, shakes, and leaves room for quiet, unexpected moments of humor.
- Tickets are available online at www.ticket-regional.de and at participating ticket outlets. The City of Idar-Oberstein would like to thank the Kreissparkasse Birkenfeld and the Bürkle Foundation for their generous support of the theater program.
