In an entertaining childbirth preparation class, performers from Theater Thikwa and the feminist collective hannsjana explore the big political questions that are directed at their bellies every day. For example, what goes in—beer, cake, or children—and what’s allowed to come out. In a humorous stage show titled “Bauchgefühl” (Gut Feeling), they take responsibility for themselves and others, develop new forms of reproduction, parenthood, and care—or consciously choose not to share their bodies or their attention with anyone.
At Theater Thikwa, artists with and without disabilities perform together on stage. At its own venue in Berlin and during guest performances around the world, Thikwa presents performances, dance, spoken-word, and musical theater without shying away from experimentation. The 42 ensemble members draw particularly on their personal characteristics and seek new forms of expression beyond established genre boundaries. In doing so, Theater Thikwa collaborates continuously with external artists from the independent theater scene. In 2018, Thikwa was awarded the prestigious Martin Linzer Theater Prize, and in 2019, the Federal Theater Prize, one of Germany’s most important theater awards.
