Reading, reading aloud and getting creative: From June 15 to August 16, 2026, the Idar-Oberstein City Library will be taking part in the "Reading Summer Rhineland-Palatinate" and the "Reading Aloud Summer Rhineland-Palatinate". Both state-wide campaigns invite children and families to immerse themselves in the world of books and stories. New this year is the joint appearance of the campaigns: Friendly robots accompany the Reading Summer and Reading Aloud Summer 2026 and provide a breath of fresh air for the popular vacation offers.
During the summer of reading, children and young people aged 6 to 16 can borrow current books free of charge. Anyone who reads at least three books during the campaign receives a certificate and takes part in a nationwide prize draw with attractive prizes. The summer of reading aloud is aimed at children aged 3 and over. Together with parents, grandparents or siblings, books are discovered and read aloud. There is a stamp for every book read. Anyone who has at least three books read to them can also win prizes.
On Friday, August 28, 2026, the city library will host a big closing party with a raffle, face painting and slush ice. "Every year, these two events show how much fun reading and reading aloud can be. At the same time, they strengthen reading skills, imagination and enthusiasm for books," says library director Sandra Ley.
The participating libraries are supported with 200,000 euros from the state. The reading promotion campaign is coordinated by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center. In Idar-Oberstein, the campaigns are also supported by the Bürkle Foundation, the Vereinigte Volksbank Raiffeisenbank eG and the Kiwanis Club Idar-Oberstein.
