The city of Idar-Oberstein is participating in the “Municipalities at the Limit” action day, which will take place on Monday, June 22, 2026. A press conference will be held at 12 p.m. in the city administration’s conference room, attended by the city executive board, the head of the city treasury, and representatives of the city council.
The leading municipal associations in Rhineland-Palatinate have called on all cities, towns, and counties to participate in the nationwide day of action “Municipalities at the Limit.” The goal is to draw attention to the catastrophic state of local government budgets through a nationwide campaign and to make it clear to citizens which local services and programs are at risk due to a lack of funding.
The day of action is aimed at citizens as well as federal and state policymakers. The goal is to convey to citizens that the financial crisis facing local governments is not an abstract phenomenon, but has concrete effects on their quality of life in their communities. The demand directed at policymakers is to eliminate the municipal funding shortfall and consistently implement the principle of connectivity—that is, to put the principle of “whoever orders, pays” into practice.
In his speech presenting the 2026 budget, Mayor Frank Frühauf noted that, according to the Federal Statistical Office, German municipalities recorded a record deficit of 24.8 billion euros in 2024. This is also reflected in the budget of the city of Idar-Oberstein, which shows a deficit of 13.5 million euros in the 2026 operating budget. Above all, the steadily rising social spending would put massive pressure on the budget, the mayor explained. The principle of connectivity would thus become a farce in practice: “We have to implement what is decided in Berlin and the state capital without receiving the necessary funds. This lacks solidarity and weakens local self-government.” Ongoing mandatory tasks are not financed from the city’s own revenues but through cash advances. Due to the deficit required to fulfill these mandatory tasks, funds for urban development are lacking. “That is why it is essential that the federal and state governments do their part and provide municipalities with adequate funding. Because without a functioning economy and a strong community, a state is not a place worth living in.”
