A key topic was the future of the BioNTech site in Idar-Oberstein. The participants agreed that the existing infrastructure, scientific expertise, and high pool of skilled workers provide excellent conditions for attracting new companies in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical technology. However, the primary goal is to preserve as many jobs as possible in the region and to offer new opportunities to the affected employees. To this end, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the city administration are in ongoing dialogue with BioNTech.
The participants also agreed that the strengths of Idar-Oberstein as a business location and of the entire region need to be communicated more effectively at the state level. To this end, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and city leaders are already in close contact with political decision-makers in Mainz. In addition, the general economic development of Idar-Oberstein as well as the current challenges facing municipalities and businesses in the region were discussed. The participants assessed the economic situation as challenging and emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the business community, local government, and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Especially in times of economic change, they noted, it is important to recognize developments early on and work together to set the right course for the future.
Another topic was the Idar-Oberstein Trade Fair as a key location factor for the regional economy. The city and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) plan to work together to further increase the trade fair hall’s utilization rate and attract additional events to the region. The Rhineland-Palatinate SME Day, taking place in August and expected to draw numerous entrepreneurs from across the state, was cited as a positive example. The development of the downtown area also played an important role in the discussions. Here, the city and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce continue to see a need for action. “Especially in economically challenging times, regular and trusting dialogue between the city administration and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce is more important than ever. Only by working together can we create the right conditions, secure jobs, promote investment, and further strengthen the future viability of our region,” Arne Rössel, Frank Frühauf, and Christina Schwardt emphasized in conclusion.
