A graduate engineer, he had held various positions with the Idar-Oberstein city administration since August 15, 1984, most recently as technical director of wastewater treatment at the municipal utilities. On May 24, 2007, he was elected by the city council as First Full-Time Deputy Mayor and—since the position was vacant—was appointed immediately. As the successor to Frank Frühauf, who had been elected mayor, Marx was elected mayor by the City Council on April 15, 2015, and re-elected to this office on December 21, 2022. His department includes the Public Order Office and the so-called “technical city hall,” which comprises the Civil Engineering Office, the Building Maintenance Depot, Building Management, and the municipal utilities—for which he also serves as plant manager in a dual role. Friedrich Marx’s term of office would normally end on April 15, 2031.
