Actions encourage reading

Book duel

In this campaign, participants get to know interesting and exciting children's and young adult novels in a fun way and vote for their favorite. The aim is to arouse curiosity about the books and increase reading motivation through active participation. The book duel is based on an idea by literary educator Simone Eutebach: the books are wrapped in cloth sleeves in advance so that the cover and details of the author and title are not visible. Two wrapped books compete for the students' favor. An exciting or funny passage from each book is read out, then the players vote on which of the two books they liked best. Several rounds are played, with the winning title always advancing to the next round. After each round, the "losers" are unpacked and briefly introduced. Once the winning title has been determined, all the books are laid out on a table for players to browse through.

Book profile

This activity is also based on Simone Eutebach's idea. The children learn about interesting stories and non-fiction books. They gather information about a book at various stations, use it to create a poster and present their book to the group or class. The aim is to arouse curiosity about the story or topic and awaken a desire to read. Starting with a cover puzzle, teams of two or three search for "their" book like a scavenger hunt. They have around 20 minutes to find the matching elements and objects and fill out a mini fact sheet. Puzzle pieces, fact sheet and found objects are glued onto cardboard. The teams tell what they have learned about their book. At the end, the children are allowed to borrow the books. The posters are given to the class or displayed in the library so that the activity can have a lasting effect.
