Events in the public street space

Events for which roads are used more than is customary require a permit. This applies in particular to

• Motor sport events with motor vehicles
• Cycling races, triathlon events, public cycling with more than 100 participants, foot marches, relay races, public hikes with more than 500 participants or on classified roads (district roads and higher)
• Removals
• Street festivals, traditional events, markets

Assemblies and processions as defined in § 14 of the Assembly Act, as well as local processions and other local religious events, and smaller local traditional events, are not subject to a permit requirement.


Requirements:

A permit may only be granted for events that are organized and carried out responsibly by an organizer. The organizer must guarantee that the event will be conducted in accordance with the conditions and requirements set by the permitting authority.

The road traffic authority of the city or municipality in whose district the event takes place is responsible for issuing the permit, with the exception of cities and municipalities with fewer than 50,000 residents. In those cases, the district administrator serves as the road traffic authority.

A permit or exemption is granted upon submission of a written application. The road traffic authority reviews the application and the submitted documents and consults with the relevant agencies (police, road maintenance authorities, forestry and nature conservation authorities).

The permit or exemption may be subject to conditions and requirements, as well as orders regarding traffic control and traffic restriction measures. These measures are coordinated with the event organizer in advance.

The application must be submitted in good time, at least two weeks before the start of the event, or earlier in the case of very large events.
