As part of the city’s theater program, the Neues Globe Theater will present Wolfgang Borchert’s play *Draußen vor der Tür* on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at the Messe Idar-Oberstein. The play was written in 1947 and became his most important work. It was recognized early on as the voice of a generation returning from war and captivity to find itself in a society that wanted to move forward as quickly as possible. Borchert died the day before the premiere of the stage adaptation, at the age of just 26.
A man returns from the war and finds himself facing closed doors. Beckmann is 25 years old, physically and emotionally scarred—and can no longer find a place in the society he served. His return from Russian captivity to a devastated Hamburg does not lead him home, but into a world that rejects him. His wife has left him, responsibility is shirked, and any hope of closeness remains fragile. What follows is a dreamlike journey through a society that wants to forget as quickly as possible. Along the way, Beckmann encounters not only people, but also death, the Elbe River, God, and the Other—a mirror image of himself.
Borchert’s play oscillates between bitter seriousness, the grotesque, and surprisingly absurd humor. It is precisely these shifts that bring Beckmann’s sense of loss into sharper focus. Live music provides commentary on the action, drives it forward, and adds an extra layer to the production. The Neues Globe Theater approaches the play with linguistic clarity and great immediacy. The result is not a museum-piece classic, but a theatrical evening that takes the harshness of the material just as seriously as its quiet, grotesque, and unexpectedly comical moments.
- Tickets are available online at www.ticket-regional.de and at participating ticket outlets. The City of Idar-Oberstein would like to thank the Kreissparkasse Birkenfeld and the Bürkle Foundation for their generous support of the theater program.
