Children are easily injured in everyday life. Parents are usually the first on the scene of an accident and can save valuable time until the emergency services arrive by taking immediate action. For this reason, the "First aid for children" course was recently held at the Regulshausen daycare center in cooperation with the German Red Cross Idar-Oberstein and the AOK health insurance company.
The course is designed to help parents acquire the necessary skills to remain capable of acting in critical situations and ensure the safety of their children. It also teaches how to recognize emergencies such as scalds, falls or choking at an early stage and how to classify them correctly in order to call 112 in good time.
Key course topics included raising awareness of sources of danger in everyday life, treating dangerous bleeding, learning life-saving emergency measures, dealing with shock, burns, breathing difficulties, poisoning and falls, as well as treating wounds. Numerous practical exercises were carried out: Stable lateral positions for children and infants, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, applying bandages, wound care, dealing with joint injuries and broken bones. Specific techniques for infants and children were taught, which differ from those for adults.
The course is designed to enable parents to act safely and quickly in an emergency. This should help to prevent panic and remain calm in an emergency, while at the same time building self-confidence and, above all, saving lives. The course participants were very interested in the topics, had fun and enjoyed the practical exercises and also commented afterwards that they had become more confident as a result.
