As part of a hands-on off-road training program, the Idar-Oberstein Volunteer Fire Department (FFIO) completed an intensive driver safety training course at the Nürburgring Off-Road Park using the TLF-3000 W stationed at Fire Station 4. The goal was to practice safe handling of the emergency vehicle under challenging conditions and to learn about and apply the technical capabilities of the Unimog in off-road terrain.
How far can you go in a Unimog? That was the question the firefighters from Idar-Oberstein had asked themselves—and that’s exactly why they took part in this intensive off-road training. Under realistic conditions, both driver and vehicle were able to demonstrate the vehicle’s capabilities and how important proper driving technique is when navigating rough terrain. The training consisted of several theoretical and practical modules, with a particular focus on vehicle control, the correct assessment of obstacles, and the targeted use of the vehicle’s technical aids.
The session began with a detailed briefing on the technical features of the Unimog. Particular emphasis was placed on the various differential locks and their proper use. Participants learned in which situations front-axle, rear-axle, or longitudinal locks should be used to ensure sufficient traction even on difficult terrain. In the subsequent practical session, the group drove on various off-road trails and obstacle courses. This allowed the firefighters to directly apply and reinforce the knowledge they had just acquired. Adjusting tire pressure also played an important role in achieving better traction on loose surfaces.

Special attention was paid to proper vehicle positioning as well as controlled and anticipatory off-road driving. The instructors taught important techniques for safely navigating difficult sections and provided valuable tips on how to operate the vehicle in a way that minimizes wear and tear. During the individual driving exercises, participants received intensive training and practice in using the differential locks appropriately for each situation. They were able to experience firsthand how the Unimog’s handling changes depending on which locking system is activated and what advantages this offers in challenging terrain. This enabled even heavily rutted or slippery sections of the route to be safely navigated. At the same time, it became clear that the right timing for engaging the locks is crucial for controlled and safe progress.
The off-road training at the Nürburgring provided the Idar-Oberstein Fire Department with valuable, hands-on training. Participants were able to significantly expand their knowledge of operating the Unimog and gain important experience for potential emergency situations in difficult terrain. In addition to improving driving skills, the training focused in particular on operating the vehicle safely and in a manner that minimizes wear and tear on the equipment. The training impressively demonstrated the capabilities of modern emergency vehicles in off-road conditions and highlighted the importance of regular training for safe operational deployment.
