The Weiherschleife is one of the region’s most popular destinations—a place where history, nature, and enjoyment come together. It is precisely here that the OIE has now installed a new e-bike charging station with two charging options, specifically catering to the needs of cyclists. The city of Idar-Oberstein has added three more charging points to the station. This is because the route along the Weiherschleife is not only popular with locals but is also a staple of many cycling tours.
The new charging option further enhances the location’s appeal: People on the go can stop here, enjoy the surroundings—and recharge their batteries at the same time. “With the new e-bike charging station at the Weiherschleife, we’re making a targeted investment in places where people actively enjoy their free time. For the city and for us, it was crucial to place the stations where they offer real added value—right in the midst of everyday life and right in the heart of the region,” said OIE Board Member Thomas Johann at the official launch with Mayor Frank Frühauf and Mayor Friedrich Marx. Also in attendance were Julia Besand, climate protection manager for the city of Idar-Oberstein; Sarah Hoffmann, managing director of Edelsteinminen GmbH; Florian Schmidt, head of municipal services at OIE; and employee Jörg Hofrath.
The location’s close proximity to dining options, in particular, makes it an ideal stop. While guests enjoy a meal or soak up the special atmosphere of the historic loop, the charging process runs in the background. This creates a harmonious overall experience that combines convenience with enjoyment. “The Weiherschleife is a flagship attraction of our city and a popular destination for visitors from near and far. The new charging station further enhances the location and demonstrates how modern infrastructure and tourist appeal can go hand in hand,” says Mayor Frühauf. His colleague, Mayor Friedrich Marx, adds: “This new feature makes the route along the Weiherschleife even more attractive, especially for cyclists. In the future, anyone traveling here will find not only a special setting but also ideal conditions for a relaxing break.”
When selecting locations for the charging stations, the partners deliberately focused on tourist-oriented sites that offer a high quality of stay. The goal is to expand charging options precisely where people are on the move—and where a charging station can provide the greatest practical benefit. For cyclists, this means less planning, more spontaneity, and, above all, a longer range for the next leg of their journey along the Nahe River.
