In female hands

To conclude the current municipal theater program, the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie will present a concert entitled "In Female Hands" on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 8 p.m. in the Idar-Oberstein Municipal Theater. Gradually, the music world is discovering more and more compositions by women, some of which have spent a long time lying dormant in archives or libraries. Unjustly so, as this concert evening will show.

The evening begins with a suite for string orchestra by composer Susan Spain-Dunk, who was born in Folkestone, England, in 1880. And of course the guests who will be on stage with the Rheinische that evening are also women. Andrea Kauten will be the soloist and Chloé Dufresne will be the evening's musical director.

Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann, is one of those women who have long since taken their place in music history. This is primarily due to her illustrious career as a pianist and her piano concerto. She began the composition with initial sketches at the age of 13, and the work was premiered in Leipzig in 1835 under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Louise Farrenc came from France and completed her Symphony No. 3 in 1847. Even though the music world has only discovered her in recent years and realized the high quality of her symphonies, Louise Farrenc was not so unknown during her lifetime, as she was a professor of piano at the conservatory in Paris for several decades.
