Existing driving license extended by driving license category D, D1, DE or D1E
Service description
To be allowed to drive buses or vehicle combinations consisting of a bus and a trailer, you need an extended driver's license for Class D, DE, D1, or D1E.
Depending on the class, your extended driver's license authorizes you to drive different types of buses:
Class D driving license:
- Motor vehicles with one driver's seat and more than 8 additional seats
- Trailers with a gross weight of up to 750 kilograms
Driving license class DE:
- Motor vehicles with one driver's seat and more than 8 additional seats
- Trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 750 kilograms
Driving license class D1:
- Motor vehicles with one driver's seat and up to 16 additional seats
- Maximum total length: 8 meters
- Trailers with a gross weight of up to 750 kilograms
Class D1E driving license:
- Motor vehicles with one driver's seat and up to 16 additional seats
- Maximum total length: 8 meters
- Trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 750 kilograms
Responsible body
The local driver's license office at the city or county administration is responsible.
Prerequisites
- Your main place of residence is in Germany.
- You are physically and mentally fit to drive a bus.
Depending on the class, the following requirements also apply:
Class D driving license:
- Driver's license: B
- Minimum age: 24 years or 20 years if you drive buses for a living
Driving license class DE:
- Driver's License: D
- Minimum age: 24 years or 20 years if you drive buses for a living
Driving license class D1:
- Driver's license: B
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive buses for a living
Class D1E driving license:
- Driver's License: D1
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive buses for a living
What documents are required?
- Application for extension of driving license
- Valid identity card or passport with current registration certificate
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view)
- Proof of physical and mental fitness (no more than 1 year old)
- Performance psychology evaluation (no more than 1 year old)
- Certificate or Report on Visual Acuity
- current driver's license
- Details of the driving school
- Proof of participation in a first aid training course
- Certificate of Good Conduct (issued within the last 3 months)
