Service description
To drive trucks or vehicle combinations consisting of a truck and a trailer, you need an extended driving license for category C, CE, C1 or C1E. You can apply for the extension of your driving license at the driving license authority in your place of residence. The extension of the driving license is limited to 5 years. You must apply for an extension before this period expires.
To apply for the extension, you must meet various requirements depending on the driving license category.
Class C driving license:
- Motor vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 t and a maximum of 8 seats excluding the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class B
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive a truck professionally
Class CE driving license:
- Motor vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 t and a maximum of 8 seats excluding the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class C
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive a truck professionally
Class C1 driving license:
- Light commercial vehicles with a gross weight of between 3.5 t and 7.5 t and a maximum of 8 seats excluding the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class B
- Minimum age: 18 years
Class C1E driving license:
- Light commercial vehicles with a gross weight of between 3.5 t and 7.5 t and a maximum of 8 seats excluding the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg, maximum weight equal to the unladen weight of the towing vehicle
- Maximum total weight of the combination of 12 t
- Required driving license: Class C1
- Minimum age: 18 years
Responsible body
The local driving license authority at the city or district administration is responsible.
Prerequisites
- Your main place of residence is in Germany.
- You have a driver's license with the required category.
- You have reached the minimum age for the respective category when the driver's license is issued.
- You have successfully completed the theoretical and practical training and examination required for the driving license category applied for.
What documents are required?
- Identity card or passport with current registration certificate
- Current biometric photo, size 45x35 millimeters portrait format, frontal shot
- Eye test certificate, not older than 2 years
- Proof of physical and mental aptitude, not older than 1 year

- Details of the driving school
- Proof that you have passed the test for the requested category C, CE, C1 or C1E
What fees apply?
The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
If the driver's license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

You can apply for the extension of your driving license 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
