Apply for a replacement for the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
Service description
You may only use a vehicle subject to registration on public roads if it has been approved for this purpose by the responsible registration authority.
The registration certificate part I, the former vehicle registration document, is considered proof of registration. As the driver of a vehicle, you must therefore always carry this with you when driving.
You must apply for a replacement document for the registration certificate part I at:
- Loss
- Theft
- Illegibility
If the registration certificate Part I has been stolen, you must report this to the police. If you lose the registration certificate Part I or it has been destroyed, make a declaration in lieu of an oath that your statements are correct.
It is not possible to apply for a replacement document online. You must go to your local registration office in person. Until the replacement document is issued, you may not drive your registered vehicle on public roads.
Responsible body
The licensing authorities of the district administrations or city administrations of the large district and independent cities are responsible.
What documents are required?
- valid identity card or passport
- for commercially used vehicles: appropriate evidence
- In the event of loss: declaration of loss to the registration authority, in individual cases with an affidavit in lieu of an oath
- In the event of theft: confirmation from the police that the theft has been reported
- Existing registration certificate part II (formerly: vehicle registration document)
- Test report on a valid general inspection in accordance with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO)
if necessary:
- if represented by another person: written power of attorney and valid identity card or passport of the authorized person
- for minors: Declaration of consent and identification documents of the legal guardian
