Applying for the renewal of a category D, DE, D1 or D1E driving license
Service description
The driving license for categories D, DE, D1 or D1E is valid for a maximum of 5 years. If you have such a license and it is about to expire, you can have it extended. You submit the application to the driving license authority in your place of residence. The extension is also valid for a maximum of 5 years.
Responsible body
The responsible authority is the district administration, in large cities belonging to a district or independent of a district the city administration.
Prerequisites
- You have a category D, D1, DE or D1E driving license.
- You are suitable for driving a bus.
What documents are required?
- Identity card or passport
- current driver's license
- biometric photo
- Proof of eyesight (not older than 2 years)
- Proof of physical and mental aptitude (not older than 1 year)
- if you are 50 years or older: performance psychology report (not older than 1 year)
What fees apply?
The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
If the driver's license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
You can submit the application at the earliest 6 months before the expiry date of your previous driving license.
If you submit the application after the expiry date of the previous driving license, a new driving license will be issued instead of an extension. The fact that you previously held a corresponding driving license is then no longer evident from the new driving license.
