Extension of a temporary driving license
Service description
The driving license for categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E is issued for a maximum of five years and can be extended by five years at the request of the license holder.
Procedure
Please contact the driving license authority responsible for your place of residence.
Responsible body
The local driving license authority at the city or district administration is responsible.
What documents are required?
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
- Previous driver's license
- a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
- Proof of eyesight in accordance with the model in Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving License Ordinance.
You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician or a doctor from the public health department. An issued certificate is valid for 2 years. - Proof of physical and mental aptitude in accordance with the specimen in Annex 5 to the Driving License Ordinance
You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. - In addition, for categories D, D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology certificate. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
What fees apply?
The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before the expiry date of the previous driving license.
Please note: If the application is submitted after the expiry date of the previous driving license, a new driving license will be issued instead of an extension. The fact that you were previously the holder of a corresponding driving license is then no longer evident from the new driving license.

What else should I know?
Regardless of whether it is a genuine extension or a new issue (due to late application), a new driving license will always be issued.
