Apply for key number 96 or key number 196 for class B

For the key number 96:

• You must be at least 18 years old, or 17 in the case of accompanied driving.
• You must have completed a driver training course of at least 7 hours and be able to provide proof of this (at least 2.5 hours of theoretical training, at least 3.5 hours of practical training).
• You must be in possession of a category B driving license or meet the requirements for obtaining one.

For the key number 196:

• You must be at least 25 years old.
• You must have held category B for at least 5 years.
• You must be able to complete and provide evidence of 9 teaching units of 90 minutes each (4 theory units and 5 practical units).
• The period between the completion of the driver training course and the registration of the key number 196 must not exceed 1 year.

The key number B96 represents an allocation that is valid throughout the European Union (EU).

The key number 196 is a national key number. The resulting authorization is therefore only valid in Germany.

Entry of the key number B196 does not entitle the holder to a category A1 driving license. It is therefore also not possible to use it to upgrade to category A2, for example.

• The key number 96 entitles the holder to drive category B motor vehicles with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kilograms. The maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination may exceed 3,500 kilograms, but may not exceed 4,250 kilograms.
