Apply for an extension of the driving license for categories AM, A1, A2 or A
Service description
With the AM driving license category, you can drive two- and three-wheeled mopeds and four-wheeled light motor vehicles.
With the A1 driving license category, you can ride motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cubic centimetres and up to 11 kW of power.
With driving license category A2, you can drive motorcycles with a power output of up to 35 kW and no more than 70 kW.
With a category A license, you can drive motorcycles and three-wheeled motor vehicles.
The AM, A1, A2 and A driving license categories are issued for an unlimited period.
Simplified requirements apply for upgrading from A1 to A2 and A2 to A.
To obtain the driving license extension, you must pass a theoretical and a practical test.
Responsible body
Your local driving license authority at the city or district administration.
Prerequisites
- You must have a driver's license.
- You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
- The minimum age for category AM is 15 years.
- The minimum age for category A1 is 16 years.
- The minimum age for category A2 is 18 years.
- The minimum age for category A is 24 years for motorcycles with direct access and 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles with a power output of more than 15 kW.
What documents are required?
- Valid identity card or passport (with current registration certificate if applicable)
- Application for extension of driving license
- a biometric photo in accordance with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (size 45x35 mm)
- Eye test certificate (not older than two years)
- Proof of first aid training (if not already provided to the driving license authority)
- valid driver's license
- If applicable, a copy of the file card from the last issuing authority (if authority is different)
- Details of the driving school
What fees apply?
The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
If the driver's license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The practical test must be taken within 12 months of passing the theoretical test. Otherwise the theoretical examination loses its validity.

- Driving license category A2 entitles the holder to drive motorcycles with a power output of up to 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg and an output power of no more than 70 kW
- with a category A driving license, the applicant can drive motorcycles and three-wheeled motor vehicles
