Applying for a category B driving license
Service description
A Class B driver's license authorizes you to drive a motor vehicle. Motorcycles are excluded from this. In addition to the driver's seat, the vehicle may be designed to carry a maximum of 8 passengers.
With a Class B driver's license, you may also tow trailers. Trailers weighing less than 750 kilograms are always permitted. Trailers weighing more than 750 kilograms are permitted if the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kilograms.
Responsible body
The local driving license authority at the city or district administration is responsible.
Prerequisites
- Your main place of residence is in Germany.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You can submit the application up to 6 months before your 18th birthday.
What documents are required?
- Application for an Initial Class B Driver's License
- A valid ID card or passport, along with a current certificate of residence if applicable
- A recent biometric photo, 45x35 millimeters in size, portrait orientation, full-face shot
- Eye exam certificate, no more than 2 years old
- Proof of participation in a first aid training course
- Details of the driving school

A Class B driver's license is valid indefinitely.
Your application will expire if you do not pass the written exam within 12 months of receiving the exam notification. The same applies if you do not pass the practical exam within 12 months of passing the written exam.

You will receive your first driving license on probation. The probationary period lasts 2 years.
