Apply for a temporary identity card
Service description
You can use the temporary ID card to bridge the time until a regular ID card is issued.
Your temporary identity card is valid for a maximum of 3 months.
You must return the provisional ID card when you are issued with the new regular ID card.
Prerequisites
You can apply for a temporary ID card under the following conditions:
- You have German citizenship
- You are registered in Germany
- You do not have a valid identity card
- You urgently need a valid identity document.
Special information for - City of Idar-ObersteinThe person for whom the document is to be issued must appear in person when applying. This also applies to minors.
What documents are required?
- Biometric digital passport photo: taken on site at the authority or by a registered domestic photo service provider (photographer)
- if available and not yet validated: old identity card or passport or child's passport (valid or already expired)
- if no valid passport or identity card is available: Birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable
- for children under the age of 16: if necessary, a declaration of consent from the parent with custody who is not present
- If there is only one parent or legal guardian, additional proof of custody

In individual cases, it may be necessary to submit further documents (e.g. to prove marital status or nationality).

The following information is available:
- You can apply for the provisional and the new, regular ID card in Germany at the same time.
- You cannot apply for a temporary identity card at German diplomatic missions abroad.
- If your ID card is stolen or lost, you must report this to the police.
