Apply for an express passport
Service description
If you need a passport urgently, you can apply for it using the express order procedure. The delivery time for your new passport is then usually 3 working days until it is ready for collection from the domestic authority. You pay a surcharge for this.
The express passport is a regular passport whose production is accelerated. If you need a passport immediately, you can apply for a temporary passport. However, this does not have all the functions of the regular passport and has a significantly shorter period of validity.
If you are traveling with children, you can also apply for their passports express.
You can apply for your passport using the express procedure at your local Citizens' Registration Office at your main place of residence. You can also make such an application at any other citizens' office if you have an important reason. There is an additional surcharge for this.
Procedure
- You can only apply for a passport using the express order procedure in person at the Citizens' Registration Office.
- The application will be filled out by the authority staff with you on site. All you have to do is sign it.
- When you apply, your fingerprints will be taken solely for the purpose of storing them in the passport chip.

- Children under the age of 6 do not have to give a fingerprint.
- You will be notified when you can collect your Express Passport.
- You can authorize another person of legal age in writing to collect the documents from the authorities.
- For important reasons, you can also apply for the document in another municipality or at a German diplomatic mission abroad.
Prerequisites
- You have German citizenship.
- There must be no grounds for refusing a passport. This includes, for example, the assumption that you will be able to obtain a passport by leaving the country.
- a criminal prosecution,
- the execution of a sentence or
- want to evade a statutory maintenance obligation.
Special information for - City of Idar-ObersteinThe person for whom the document is to be issued must appear in person when applying. This also applies to minors.
What documents are required?
- Biometric digital passport photo: taken on site at the authority or by a registered domestic photo service provider (photographer)
- a valid identity document, for example:
- Your old passport
- temporary passport, identity card or temporary identity card
- If applicable, civil status certificate such as:
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Civil partnership certificate
- for children under the age of 16: if necessary, a declaration of consent from the parent with custody who is not present
- If there is only one parent or legal guardian, additional proof of custody
