Exchange old driver's license for a new one

Old paper driver's licenses have been gradually losing their validity since January 19, 2022—on a staggered basis according to the holder's year of birth.
When your old paper driver's license expires, you must have it replaced with the currently valid, standardized, forgery-proof European Union (EU) driver's license card.
Even if you hold an older driver's license in plastic card format, you must exchange it.
What documents are required?
- Proof of identity, for example identity card or passport
- current biometric passport photo
- old original driver's license
- current registration certificate, if applicable
What fees apply?

There may be an additional charge of 6.32 euros for the direct mailing of the new driving license by the Bundesdruckerei. The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt). If the driving license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.Legal basis
