The old, dilapidated stair tower in reinforced concrete construction had been closed for some time due to significant structural defects and the associated lack of traffic safety. An expert opinion at the time confirmed that a sustainable and economical renovation was no longer possible and it was recommended that the staircase be demolished and a replacement structure in solid or steel construction be erected. The demolition of the old staircase and the construction of a new galvanized steel structure were subsidized by urban development funds from the "Active City - Oberstein Town Centre" funding measure as part of a regulatory measure.
