As part of the "Film im Theater" season, the StattKino initiative in cooperation with the Idar-Oberstein Cultural Office will be showing the drama "The Seeds of the Sacred Fig Tree" on Friday, 13 February 2026 at 7.30 pm in the municipal theater. Shot secretly and under difficult circumstances in Iran, the film by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof was the German candidate for the Oscar in the "Best International Film" category in 2025, but came away empty-handed. Landgasthof Böß will be serving "Persian Truths" at 6.30 pm in the theater's banquet hall as a fitting meal offering. Registration is required for this event.
In September 2022, the young Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini is arrested by the morality police in Iran and dies while in custody. Nationwide protests follow, which the mullah regime has bloodily suppressed. Against this backdrop, Mohammad Rasoulof stages a family story that shows the effects of a tense situation in a torn society. What happens when people are corrupted in a totalitarian regime and the family is destroyed as the last bastion of supposed security is shown in this film, sometimes subtly, sometimes with an emotional impact that lingers for a long time.
Although the demonstrations increase and the state cracks down with ever tougher measures, Iman decides to side with the regime, upsetting the balance of his family. While the devout father struggles with the psychological strain of his new job, his daughters Rezvan and Sana are shocked and electrified by the events. His wife Najmeh, on the other hand, is desperately trying to keep everyone together.
The film condenses, dramatizes and condenses the events in Iran, underpinning the family constellation with a great deal of psychological depth and credibility. Mohammad Rasoulof stages the events so densely and excitingly that you follow the characters and developments breathlessly and don't feel the impressive running time of almost three hours for a second - that's how much the film captivates its audience.
