To conclude the current municipal subscription program, the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie will present a concert entitled "Out of the Shadows" on Saturday, 14 March 2026 at 8 pm in the Idar-Oberstein Municipal Theatre. The Rheinische is once again devoting itself entirely to the music of female composers - and putting the spotlight on works that deserve to be heard more often. There will be an introduction to the program at 7.30 pm.
The concert evening "Out of the Shadows" is dedicated entirely to female creativity in classical music. The theme of the evening is reflected not only in the choice of pieces, but also in the line-up. Not only are the works written by women, but the interpretation is also in female hands. Esther Birringer is a soloist who is known for her sensitive playing. The conductor Raimonda Skabeikaité will lead the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie through this evening of discovery.
The program takes up an approach that the Rheinische Philharmonie has already successfully established: Bringing works by female composers who have long been unjustly hidden back into the limelight. The title of the evening refers to the fact that there are still numerous treasures to be unearthed in music history that were overshadowed by their male contemporaries.
The concert evening begins with the "Suite en forme de valses" by Mel Bonis (1858-1937). The Paris-born composer created an extensive body of work characterized by fine French Romanticism. The concerto for piano and orchestra in B flat major by Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) is the centerpiece of the evening. Born in Friedland, she was primarily known for her symphonies during her lifetime and moved in important social circles in Berlin. Her piano concerto from the 1850s is currently experiencing a well-deserved renaissance and impresses with its powerful yet sensitive tonal language. The concert concludes with the Symphony No. 2 in D major by Louise Farrenc (1804-1875). Farrenc, who taught as a professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire for decades, was well known in her day. The high quality of her symphonies has been rediscovered and re-evaluated by the music world in recent years.
