The city administration of Idar-Oberstein warns against fake e-mails that are supposedly sent in the name of Lord Mayor Frank Frühauf. These are attempts at fraud in the form of so-called CEO fraud. Criminals pretend to be executives in order to manipulate employees or external recipients into transferring money or disclosing sensitive data. In this case, the fraudster pretends to be the mayor of the city of Idar-Oberstein and needs photos of gift cards.
The city administration advises those affected not to respond to such e-mails and to delete them immediately. It will file a corresponding criminal complaint.
