The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. (German War Graves Commission) was founded in 1919 and is dedicated to the task of searching for German war dead abroad, recording and maintaining their graves on behalf of the Federal Government. The Volksbund supports relatives in matters of war graves care, advises public and private bodies, supports international cooperation in the field of war graves care and promotes encounters between young people at the resting places of the dead.
Today, the Volksbund looks after more than 830 war cemeteries in 45 countries, where around 2.8 million war dead are buried. Through its work, it preserves the memory of the victims of war and tyranny. Under the motto "Together for Peace", the Volksbund also organizes international youth encounters and work camps throughout Europe. These serve to promote international understanding and reconciliation. The donations from the house and street collection are a contribution to securing this work. This is why Minister President Alexander Schweitzer, among others, is also calling for support for the fundraising campaign.
