A sustainable, vibrant cityscape is the goal that Idar-Oberstein has successfully pursued with the federal program "Sustainable inner cities and centers" (ZiZ). Over the past three years, around 80 exciting projects have been implemented as part of this program, which have revitalized the inner city regions of Idar and Oberstein in a variety of ways. From creative urban design campaigns to innovative events and construction measures - the change is clearly noticeable and visible. A selection of the key projects is summarized in several press releases.
The journey began in September 2022, when the Idar-Oberstein Economic Development Agency launched the "networked and digital" project as part of the federal program "Sustainable inner cities and centers" (ZiZ). Since then, the city has been able to implement a wide range of initiatives with the support of the "Citymood" center management team, which have not only increased the quality of stay, but also intensified networking between retail, gastronomy and administration.
"In 1098 days, more than 80 projects were realized together with the citizens, local actors and the city administration. A total of around 1.2 million euros was invested to make the city centers of Idar and Oberstein even more liveable and inviting," says Sarah Wagner from the economic development department.
Colorful accents and clean cities: this is how Idar-Oberstein blossoms
One of the highlights was the visual beautification of both town centers. Flower arrangements, fresh planting and a thorough cleaning of the public spaces provided an immediately visible freshness boost. For example, signs, bus stops and seating areas were extensively cleaned and refurbished. New garbage cans and freshly painted benches now brighten up the townscape. In the Oberstein pedestrian zone, colourful lattice elements symbolizing flowers and umbrellas adorn the streets, while colourful flower pots brighten up the appearance of Idar.

The creative "Pimp-My-City" campaigns, which created selfie points at particularly beautiful locations in the city and invite people to linger and take photos, were particularly popular with citizens. In Idar, these are in the pedestrian zone and near the ice cream parlor.
New impetus for young people and visitors: the city is becoming more liveable
In addition to the visual enhancement of squares and streets, structural measures were also successfully implemented. One example is the redesigned play area in Austraße, which now has a new play tower and secure fencing to make families' hearts beat faster. The Jugendtreff am Markt (JAM) in Idar has also undergone extensive refurbishment, including new lighting and improved bicycle parking facilities. With the upcoming redesign of the Idar-Oberstein Tourist Information Office, the program is now entering its final phase. In the coming weeks, the building will be given a new look both inside and out and will become a modern flagship for the town. This measure will not only increase the attractiveness of the town for tourists, but also convey the identity and hospitality of Idar-Oberstein to the outside world.
A step into the future: Idar-Oberstein as a model for vibrant city centers
"In recent years, we have shown how much potential there is in our city centers. The projects within the ZiZ program have made it possible to create a sustainable cityscape that increases both the quality of life for residents and the attractiveness for visitors," says Caroline Pehlke, describing the intention behind the selection of measures. The successful implementation of the 80 or so projects is not only proof of the creativity and commitment of those involved, but also a clear sign of the joint commitment of the city society to shaping its own city center and making it fit for the future. Idar-Oberstein thus demonstrates how urban centers can be made lively and modern - an invitation to everyone to rediscover and experience the city.
