Helping hands for all generations

As part of their company visits, Lord Mayor Frank Frühauf and the city's business development team were recently guests at "Die Alltagsbegleiter". Managing Director Selina
Dorow explained the work of the company, which has been based in the Oberstein pedestrian zone since November 2022, to the Mayor and business development officer Caroline Pehlke. The dedicated team - which, together with the Kusel location, comprises 36 employees - supports people in Idar-Oberstein and the Birkenfeld district in a variety of ways so that they can participate in social life and manage their household even in difficult situations.

"It is impressive to see how much commitment is being shown here to support our fellow citizens," explained Lord Mayor Frühauf. He was convinced that this work makes an important contribution to society. Managing Director Selina Dorow emphasized: "Our everyday companions are a valuable support for many people who are dependent on help. We are delighted that our work enables us to help our fellow citizens to live independently in their familiar surroundings for as long as possible."

The activities of the everyday companions include household help such as cleaning, shopping and preparing meals, as well as accompanying people to doctors, hairdressers or authorities. They also go for walks together, play afternoons or cultural events. The support is open to all age groups - from children to senior citizens. Especially for people with care level 1 or higher, the services are covered by care insurance, which minimizes the bureaucratic effort for customers. Self-payers can also make use of the services, for example in exceptional circumstances or for accompanying trips. However, the everyday companions do not take on any care tasks.

The work of the everyday companions helps people to live in their familiar surroundings for as long as possible, maintain social contacts and receive support with everyday tasks. The flexible working hours also give employees a great deal of autonomy. Despite the high level of commitment, there are still challenges in Idar-Oberstein, as staff numbers are limited and new employees are difficult to find. Nevertheless, the team is motivated to help where it is needed.
