At the beginning of June, the city's economic development department launched a call for used, well-preserved cups for this year's "Advent Glow" on Idar's Schleiferplatz from December 11 to 13, 2025 under the motto "Do you still have all your cups in the cupboard?" - and the response was overwhelming. The aim of the campaign was to collect around 1,500 cups in order to make the popular Christmas market more sustainable and thus eliminate the need for disposable cups.
Right from the start, the willingness of citizens to collect cups was so great that the target has already been reached. That's why it's now time to stop collecting cups!
The city's business development department has inspected the cups, applied dishwasher-safe campaign stickers and stored them. This ensures that every cup shines in new splendor for the Advent glow - ready for mulled wine, punch and a festive atmosphere.
"We were particularly pleased that many of the cups handed in were real rarities from Christmas markets all over Germany, representing four decades of Christmas market tradition," says Caroline Pehlke, delighted with the success of the campaign.
"We would like to thank all the citizens who donated - the commitment is simply fantastic, it shows how many people want to join us in setting an example of sustainability in action," adds Sarah Wagner.
The planned reusable deposit system will create a charming, colorful mix of cups that avoids waste and thus conserves resources and gives the Advent glow a very special touch - for a Christmas market with a clear conscience.
The Advent Glow from December 11 to 13, 2025 is a date that everyone should definitely make a note of in their calendar.
