Under the musical direction of Enrique Ugarte and with Gabriel Schwabe on the cello, the orchestra presents works by Weill, Piazolla and Shostakovich. There will be an introduction to the play at 7.30 pm. The theater program is supported by Kreissparkasse Birkenfeld as the main sponsor.
The concert will open with the suite from "Die Dreigroschenoper" by Kurt Weill, followed by Astor Piazzolla's "Le Grand Tango" for cello and ensemble. Piazolla, an Argentinean bandeon player and composer, is considered the founder of Tango Nuevo, a further development of the traditional Tango Argentino.
The second part of the evening will feature Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No. 1, which the composer began in 1934 as a commission from a state jazz commission in the Soviet Union, whose aim was to counter the jazz sounds from America, which were considered "decadent" there, with a Soviet musical style of its own.
The program concludes with a work by the composer and pianist Friedrich Gulda, born in Vienna in 1930. His concerto for cello and wind orchestra is considered virtuosic and extraordinary, combining influences from folk music, jazz and classical music, and also places high demands on the soloist.
