Information from the State Office for the Environment on surveys of nationwide insect monitoring (butterflies and damselflies, grasshoppers) and ecosystem monitoring
As part of the nationwide insect monitoring and ecosystem monitoring, surveys will be carried out in selected sampling areas in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2026.
In the nationwide insect monitoring program, butterflies, damselflies and grasshoppers will be surveyed from May to August 2026. Butterflies and damselflies are recorded several times a year along a fixed route, while grasshoppers are recorded once on individual grassland areas.
In the nationwide ecosystem monitoring, mapping work will be carried out in the period from April to October 2026. This involves recording biotope types and landscape structures in order to obtain information on the frequency, condition and changes to biotopes in the overall landscape. The surveys on the sample areas have no influence on the existing or future use of the areas.
The surveys are carried out on behalf of the state, represented by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment (LfU), by experienced experts (mappers). As part of the surveys, the mappers are generally permitted to enter properties (§ 2 LNatSchG). The commissioned mappers carry appropriate official certificates with them, which they can show in the field.
